The CIC or Certified Insurance Counselor designation is awarded by The National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research. The CIC designation is the premier designation bestowed by the Alliance.

To earn the Certified Insurance Counselor designation an agent must demonstrate his or her commitment to ongoing education. The designation is awarded only after an agent has taken 100 classroom hours of training and passed 5 comprehensive exams which are in addition to the examination given by the state to obtain a license. Once the designation is awarded, to maintain the designation, an agent must do 20 hours per year of continuing education to make sure he or she is staying on top of their knowledge of insurance. It is estimated that less than 10% of agents nationwide have this mark of distinction.
